The theme of India's G20 presidency – "Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam" or "One Earth One Family One Future" – is taken from the ancient Sanskrit text of the Maha Upanishad. Essentially, the subject affirms all forms of life – human, animal, plant and microorganism – and their interrelationships on Earth and the wider universe.

Here are some of the key aspects and features of the G20:

G20 COUNTRIES

1. Membership:

G20 consists of 19 member countries, which are Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa. South Korea, Türkiye, the United Kingdom and the United States. The European Union is also shown as a guest. These countries were selected based on their significant impact on the global economy.

2. Leadership:

The G20 has no permanent secretariat or any fixed leadership structure. Instead, the presidency rotates annually among its member states. The host country for the year assumes the presidency and plays a key role in setting the agenda and hosting the annual G20 summit.

3. Agenda

The primary focus of the G20 is economic and financial cooperation. Member countries discuss issues such as monetary policy, fiscal policy, trade and financial regulation. However, the agenda has evolved to include discussion on broader global challenges such as climate change, sustainable development, poverty reduction and global health, reflecting the interrelationship of these issues with the global economy.

4. Summit:

The G20 summit is the most high-profile event of the grouping. It brings together the leaders of the member countries to discuss and take decisions on various global issues. These summits often result in joint communiqués and agreements on specific actions or policies.

5. Working group and ministerial meetings:

In addition to the annual summit, G20 members hold regular meetings of finance ministers and central bank governors, foreign ministers, labor ministers and others. These meetings help coordinate policies and initiatives at a technical level before they are presented at the summit.

6. Outreach:

The G20 recognizes the importance of engaging with non-member countries and international organizations. It has established outreach mechanisms to involve stakeholders such as guest countries, regional organizations and civil society. The goal of this inclusivity is to gather a wide variety of perspectives and expertise.

7. Impact:

The decisions and agreements of the G20 have had a significant impact on the global economy. For example, during the global financial crisis of 2008–2009, the G20 played a key role in coordinating responses to stabilize the global financial system and promote economic recovery.

8. Criticism:

Despite its importance, the G20 has faced criticism. Some argue that its decision-making processes lack transparency and inclusivity, while others believe that it has not been effective in tackling serious global challenges such as income inequality and climate change.

CONCLUSION

In conclusion, the G20 is a major international forum that plays an important role in addressing global economic challenges and promoting cooperation among the world's major economies. Although it has made significant contributions to global economic stability, it grapples with the evolving nature of global challenges and the need for more inclusive decision-making processes.
